Awesome natural pools of Tenerife

If there is something we love about Tenerife is its nature and the diversity of its landscapes.

Endless sandy beaches, the highest peak in Spain, natural parks, giant cliffs, gorges, and also countless natural pools … or ‘puddles’ as they call them there.

Puddles are unique places that form between the sea and the rocks. The sea and the wind erosion on the volcanic rocks form these puddles or natural swimming pools where you can enjoy a total connection with the wildest nature.

Imagine the vast sea in front of you but to be also protected by the rocks. It is a sense of balance between chaos and absolute peace, a sense of control and calm, and at the same time of being aware of the savage power of nature.

In one of our holidays to the island of Tenerife we had the opportunity to go on a trip in search of these natural pools, and since then we are hooked.

These are the ones we liked most:

Charco del Viento (the wind puddle)

It is the result of ancient volcanic eruptions, which have formed a beautiful natural bay in which two arms of petrified lava protect these pools from the strong waves in the area.

We love it because it is a luxury to bathe in its crystalline waters, and the children are excited to discover marine plants and small fish with snorkel glasses.

It is located in the Santa Catalina neighbourhood, La Guancha.

The Tancon/ El tancón

It is a spectacular natural pool hidden inside a cave. The first time we saw it we were left speechless.

A unique gift of nature to which we must also have respect and caution. If the sea is not calm it is better to not go in in order to avoid any danger.

It is located on the coast of the Port of Santiago, cerca del hotel El Marqués Palace .

The Caletón/ The Caletón

The eruption of the Trevejo volcano buried more than 300 years ago part of the town of Garachico and these pools are the result of this whimsical piece of engineering created by nature.

The coast of rocks struggling with the wind and the waves, make their environment a spectacular landscape. In addition the access is adapted and therefore suitable for all audiences.

Located in Garachico, in the north of the island.

Charco de la Laja

The spectacular views and the calm, clear waters make this volcanic paradise one of the most charming places in the area.

Although the access is easy and it is well prepared for swimmers, you have to be very careful with the waves, especially if you go with children.

Located on the north coast of Tenerife in San Juan de la Rambla.

These are our favorite places, but there is a great variety of natural pools and puddles all over the island. Many are already adapted for tourism and other, wilder ones, still retain an indomitable spirit.

Now it’s your turn, choose which are your favourite ones. We still have many places to discover.
