TENERIFE – 4 Activities in Puerto de Santiago

Welcome to Tenerife, my friends!

Puerto_de_Santiago,_TenerifeThis year we chose this beautiful island for our winter family holidays. Tenerife has spring-like weather throughout the year and at this time boasts up to 26 degrees during the day and around 15 degrees at night. Nothing to complain about, being February, don’t you agree?

The island of Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, so in our one week stay we had to decide where to go. For this reason we stayed at the Marqués Palace hotel, very comfortable apartments in Puerto de Santiago, a great area with lots of activities. You’ll see that there are many things to do to have fun with children!

Diving

In Puerto de Santiago, there are plenty of diving schools that organise boat dives around the island. The Arena Beach, which I mention later, is very suitable to diving and snorkelling because it has an incredibly rich seabed. We found spectacular volcanic formations there, and we even saw turtles!

Whale sighting

In the channel between the island of La Gomera and Tenerife you can be sight whale colonies, and with a little bit of luck, they say you can even see dolphins. The port of Santiago area is located just in front of la Gomera, making it a privileged place to see whales. There are daily excursions by boat or kayak, according to your choice. We did the full pack, boat trip and lunch with stops to bathe in the clear waters. When we came across a group of whales it was an awesome experience, I will never forget the faces of my little ones!

Arena beach

playa-arena-santiago-teide-fcAs you know, Tenerife is a volcanic island, so it has several black sand beaches. I don’t know about you, but we were very surprised! The nearest beach to the Santiago Port is one of those, the Arena beach. It has a nice promenade and some incredible sunsets. The Gomera Island can be seen in the background, and the colours of the sunset are amazing.

Boat tour through the cliff of the Giants / Tour en barco por el acantilado de los Gigantes

parador_de_la_gomera_2_vistas_desde_el_paradorA few kilometres north of the Tenerife Port you can find the cliffs of the Giants, a “rampart” of rock between 300 and 600m high. Several companies make daily trips to these gigantic rocks. In this area, I also recommend stopping at the beach of the Guíos, also called the beach of the Giants, where you can get a beautiful view of the cliffs.

Besides these places near the Santiago port obviously a visit to the Teide National Park is a must.

Now it’s your turn to tell us your favourite activities in this area!
